Amazon FBA Shipping Guide for the United States

US FBA shipping requires product-level review of importer of record, HTS classification, bond, agency controls and fulfilment-centre delivery.

What should be clarified first?

The US low-value threshold may simplify some parcels but does not remove product compliance or importer responsibility for commercial FBA inventory.

Marketplace shipments require platform compliance as well as transport planning. Carton labels, product labels, shipment plans, warehouse appointments and seller-console data should follow the same operational plan.

Planning the process step by step

Determine HTS and agency coverage, establish importer and broker arrangements, and align the Seller Central plan with the carrier delivery model.

  1. Check FDA, FCC, USDA or other agency scope by product.
  2. Provide manufacturer, origin and detailed description on the invoice.
  3. Confirm appointment, pallet and floor-loaded delivery restrictions.

Factors that affect cost and transit time

Do not compare quotes only by the first transport price shown. Dimensional weight, remote-area service, fuel, customs presentation, additional handling and local-delivery conditions can change the total. Estimated transit time can also vary with booking cut-off, flight or line-haul capacity, weekends and customs review.

Even when duty is low, brokerage, bond, examination and warehouse delivery can add cost. Do not build landed cost from air freight alone.

Documents and destination checks

Commercial shipments should have an invoice or proforma with a clear product name, quantity, unit value, total value, currency, origin and purpose. Verify the consignee name, telephone, email, full address and postal code before booking. Check separately whether the product or destination requires an approval or permit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Common problems include estimating dimensions, using a vague content description, understating value or omitting consignee contact details. Another mistake is treating transit time as flight time alone and ignoring customs clearance and final-mile delivery.

Naming Amazon as importer, using a six-digit HS without US HTS detail, or considering agency rules late are critical errors.

A short pre-shipment checklist

  • Measure the parcel’s actual weight and three outer dimensions again.
  • Match the product description, quantity and value against the documents.
  • Verify the consignee address, postal code and contact channels.
  • Check the destination’s current acceptance and import requirements.

Create a US import-compliance file per product before the first shipment.

Important note: Carrier and customs rules can change by product, route and date. Confirm the current requirements before booking; this guide is not a substitute for case-specific customs or legal advice.
